My co-worker's husband is the promoter for this band. They're from Manchester I think. I really like one of their songs a lot, so I'm going to plug it here. It's kind of a Radiohead-like tune. Shoshin, "Through the Leaves" Most of their other stuff is more ska-like. |

Hyper New Yorker promoter guy's quote: 'We went to visit her relatives in Spain, where we went for her cousin's wedding, and I couldn't understand a word, and we came out of this lunch place and were late and didn't know how to find the church. Anyway, doesn't matter... when we came out, there was this music coming from across the street. In the pouring down rain, you know? We were late, but I knew then I had to go hear it, and there they were. The girl drummer and all everything, pounding out music in the rain on the street in Spain. I knew then that somehow that things just fall together for a purpose, and it's been the same ever since. One thing after another just fell into place, and now we're lined up for a world tour." -Robert, over beers and nachos, NYC, USA |

Neil Young "Shots" just crossed my suggested playlist or whatever thing for the 3rd time. Primitive feeling it tight groove in the rhythm section, overloaded fuzzy guitar, but somehow strangely more intense and unpleasant than a lot of metal even. But at the same time a melodic whistle-able riff that will soak an earworm into you. Check it out, play your real guitar or air guitar. Scott Walker, "Cossacks Are" Few have heard of Scott Walker outside of the UK, but he's a heavy musical hitter from way back. I first heard of him from an interview with a Norwegian black metal guitarist/songwriter, who claimed this crooner as the person he most wants to emulate. David Bowie, Brian Eno, many others have said something similar.
Check out Scott Walker, it's a long and rich trip over a lot of years, and intense at every point. "Were [sic] not your monkey and so what?"-á -The Sex Pistols (2006) |

Lightnin' Hopkins "Guitar Lightnin'" I love this guy. He's kind of a guitar saint-poet-guru-wise man to me. Instrumental artistry, country man plain-spoken real life impressionsy/poetry, sometimes real deep blues, and usually lot of roguey happy living.*
"Cotton" Lightnin' flown out to L.A. and speaking some truth, with the help of a nice rhythm section.
A song about the women, played in the solo back porch Lightnin' style: "At Home Blues"
*Background: Lightnin' grew up in deep Texas, small steamy hot town in the woods too far from Houston. Son of farm hand cotton pickers, did his share of picking and hoeing. Far from the city, not many musicians around, he developed this thing where he accompanied himself alternating between playing a coming-and-going of a bass line with his thumb, and lots of melody and licks with 4 more available fingers. While nobody was paying much attention, he wrote and recorded about 1,000 songs, most of them solo. Guy usually took cash advances of as low as 40 bucks, because he needed the money at the time. No royalties on future sales. Yeah, it's a crying shame. Then again, that was the man and I guess that's part of what made his music. I've been discovering Neil Young and Crazy Horse lately. I deliberately ignored them back in their time, because it was the punk/post-punk/paisley-punk/gothic/New Wave/avant garde/electronics 80s. You had your pick of many moods, all at once. And these loud country folk hard rock punk guys didn't fit in anywhere. But they were pretty intense, out there on the sidelines.
So, many years later, a song from the periphery of consciousness, that always punched me and I always thought I should check out-- Neil Young and Crazy Horse "Powderfinger." Crazy Horse huddled up and laying down simple prairie punk, like Meat Puppets would do later. Neil telling a harsh, harsh poem harder than any punk of the time. Tricky bustard opens up with country vocals and cowboy chords, then gradually takes you into grim gruesome deterministic homegrownpoetic storytelling land...
Look out, Mama, there's a white boat comin' up the river With a big red beacon, and a flag, and a man on the rail I think you'd better call John, 'Cause it don't look like they're here to deliver the mail And it's less than a mile away I hope they didn't come to stay It's got numbers on the side and a gun And it's makin' big waves.
Daddy's gone, my brother's out hunting in the mountains Big John's been drinking since the river took Emmy-Lou So the powers that be left me here to do the thinkin' And I just turned twenty-two I was wonderin' what to do And the closer they got, The more those feelings grew.
Daddy's rifle in my hand felt reassurin' He told me, Red means run, son, numbers add up to nothin' But when the first shot hit the docks I saw it comin' Raised my rifle to my eye Never stopped to wonder why. Then I saw black, And my face splashed in the sky.
Shelter me from the powder and the finger Cover me with the thought that pulled the trigger Think of me as one you'd never figured Would fade away so young With so much left undone Remember me to my love, I know I'll miss her.

Oh man, this one has come down to the Earth, to uplift souls, minds and booties. Brian Eno & John Cale, "Spinning Away" Sort of beautiful African guitar and rhythm, with Cale viola solo, and Eno laying down the chord shifts and soul vocals.
Up on a hill as the day dissolves With my pencil turning moments into line High above in the violet sky A silent silver plane, it draws a golden chain
One by one all the stars appear As the great winds of the planet spiral in Spinning away like the night sky at Arles In the million insect storm, the constellations form
On a hill under a raven sky I have no idea exactly what I've drawn Some kind of change, some kind of spinning away With every single line moving further out in time
And now as the pale moon rides in the stars In the stars Her form in my pale blue lines in the stars In the stars
And there as the world rolls round in the stars In the stars I draw, but the lines move 'round in the stars In the stars
And there as the great wheels blaze in the stars In the stars I draw, but my drawing fades in the stars In the stars
And now as the old sun dies in the stars In the stars I draw and the four winds sigh in the stars In the stars

The romanitciism and the true root of Texas culture. Minus the huffing of dumbarse mouth-breathers. By an original Austin/Luckenbach stoner musician: Ray Wiley Hubbard, "The Dust of the Chase"
I come down from Oklahoma with a pistol in my boot A pair of dice, a deck of cards and a bible in my suit I come her as the cause of tears, I am a crying shame Seven stud or eternal blood, just looking for a game
I double crossed the State of Texas and they give me a little time I taught myself to doublecut the cards and hold scriptures in my mind I learned to love the tumblin dice and to believe the word Tombstones or rolling bones, beats anything I ever heard.
Patience is a virtue that I don't possess And I can't deny that heavan lies beneath a cotton dress How small a part of time we share 'till we hear the sound of wings I'm lost in the dust of the chase that my life brings.
I have walked through God's green pastures and seen the rich blue skies I have seen the fall of man and the kingdom hidden from his eyes I have heard the roar of thunder and felt the lightening bolt And when I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I take along Samuel Colt
Every night I kiss the cards and hold them to my breast And when I see the king of hearts I know that I am blessed And though my eyes are blind sometimes, I know there's something there And when the times at hand and I kill a man, I say a little prayer.
I come down from Oklahoma with a pistol in my boot A pair of dice, a deck of cards and a bible in my suit How small a part of time we share 'till we hear the sound of wings I'm lost in the dust of the chase that my life brings.

Steely Dan "Aja" album. The whole thing is multi-individual musicians working together gem. To present only one, "Deacon Blues" Ignore the primitive Youtube scrolling lyrics. These guys are entirely headphone audio soundscapers. No performances, no visuals, lyrics are accessories.
[That album has a lot of the so-called "mu chord" or "Steely Dan chord." Which is just a regular bright-sounding Major chord, with one grumpy 2nd interval bastard in there dampening the party a bit. Major chords-- A root waveform, and spot higher up called the Third. It's waveform intersects the root wave once in a while, and they sound great together. All along the nano-seconds between, they were going down the road on their own, and who knew-- they ran into each other and turned out to be soul mates. The journey and the meet up somehow makes the human ear and soul feel damn good. Nobody really knows why.
But wait, there's another character in this tale. The 5th. It's a little higher vibration than our base friend the Root, and it's new on-the-same-path friend The Third. That bright little sprite sings so sweet that and quick that it's vibration intersects Root and The Third both, many times per second. Oh lord, now we got a sweet singing team!
That's the Major Triad. They can do AC/DC one-two-three up and down the road all day long. And sound great doing it, and never get tired! The mu chord has the same happy guys, but adds in one more guy-- The Second. He'd get along with the Fourth or the Sixth, but he's about like Root, but just a little ways off. F-you, I'll never get you and you'll never get me,frienemy! Get on my side, or I'll get on your side. You can hear that all over Steely Dan "Aja." Sometimes right in the midst of chords, and sometimes sequences of notes going around Root, Third and Fifth, and omg back to Mr. Grumpy Second. So brilliant.
My advice to you: Do not ever look up "worst guitar solo" on Youtube. You will be sorry. No joke. Really and truly sorry.

(Read an interview with that younger bass player once. They were doing a long Floyd set, at that level of continuous magnitude. He somehow choked, completely flubbed something, squonker busted everything. Looks over to David Gilmour, like "I'm dead, just kill me forever." Gilmour just smiles, gives him the nod, "Let's go." So many nice tales like that about David Gilmour. More about the unknown musicians he's helped out along the way. Oh yeah.

Bill Nelson - A Private View Just one epic song from this man's collection of 100s, each different, mostly recorded solo playing all instruments, in his unheated studio in Yorkshire. He's no unknown either, his sound is heard on YMO in Japan, David Sylvian in England, and more and more. Uncredited, sadly. But Bill seems not to mind much at all. What a guy.... incredible. Can't be long before somebody raids the treasure trove and presents it to the world. Get some of the loot for your generations, bud Bill!

Jimmy Cliff, 'House of Exile' The legend or truth told in Liberia at the time was that Jimmy Cliff wrote this one from inside prison in Nigeria. That was late 1970s, people from America and Caribbean were going solo (bravely 07) to explore roots in Africa. Please remember, about 40 years ago, no internet, long distance landline telephone calls cost US $1 per minute or something. Pan Am Airlines.
Anyway, Jimmy did it, and said the wrong thing to the authorities in 1970s Nigeria. In jail far from home. Here's his fine fine song. Better if heard analog, with bad speakers out in the open air....
[/url] There's a day of feasting and a day of famine Day of sadness and a day of joy You could see in the day of feasting Life isn't just a little play-like toy.
So the day arrived when you least expected Cos you always thought you were well protected Now you feel like a fish out of water So now you're wondering what's the matter.
Oh remember you said it wouldn't happen to you Now you're thinking how to start a new A drowning man will catch at a straw You were warned but you wouldn't take heed.
Everything in creation must obey a law. Its true in words as it is in deed. You were so puffed up in your pomps and pride You're exposed you got none to hide
Yes, you used to look down on the folks beside you Never they think you would have come down too
Remember they said you got to reap what you sow Simple truth everybody know
Oh what are you on a house of exile Watching you now on your own last mile Yes, what are you on a house of exile Watching you now on your own last mile
[Music interlude]
Oh what are you on a house of exile Watching you now on your own last mile O OH what are you on a house of exile Watching you now on your own last mile

-Between living in a wood or stone structure with a roof on it and electricity, and hanging with the island folk, and the little sounds of pastures and the ocean, Pete composed pages of musical sheet music and sent them to the city. But apparently just that-- no notes on how they should be played (what arrangements of instruments and voices, etc.) Like a pre-taping age guy such as Bach, you get the raw notes, you imagine how to Produce them/make them into sounds. Therefore, many versions of his songs on YouTube and Spotify.
-Linking Pete's most popular one, Farewell to Stromness, played by an odd guy on piano who might be about like himself as anybody. Many more versions available, and many less relaxing but equally fine tunes he found in that remote silence.
But, on the other hand, it is the novice usually who gets the famous ace by doing at some moment the unexpected thing.

Was listening to some This Mortal Coil on YouTube, and before I could stop it, Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil, "Gathering Dust" I love both of those projects, but wasn't prepared for the crazy fine art ME-109 vs. Spitfire demonic hatred animation.
Who did that? Bernie Wrightson of Heavy Metal fame maybe?

Syd Barrett, "Wolfpack" Amazingly tough song for 1970 (the same year as Beatles "Let It Be"). If you listen to it, you might be reminded of some motifs that came later, such as some Bowie craziness, "The Wall," gothic stuff from many people.
Howling the pack in formation appears Diamonds and clubs, light misted fog, the dead Waving us back in formation The pack in formation
Bowling they bat as a group And the leader is seen so early The pack on their backs, the fighters Through misty the waving, the pack in formation Far reaching waves on sight, shone right I lay as if in surround
All enmeshing, hovering The milder I gaze All the animals laying trail Beyond the bough winds Mild the reflecting electricity eyes
Tears, the life that was ours Grows sharper and stronger away and beyond Short wheeling, fresh spring Gripped with blanched bones moaned Magnesium, proverbs and sobs
Howling the pack in formation appears Diamonds and clubs, light misted fog, the dead Waving us back in formation The pack in formation

"Snake Charmer" Holger Czukay, Jah Wobble, Jan Hassel, The Edge, -- whole load of multi-dimensional collaborationist guys. The Edge was young and kind of alt artiste-like then, they let into put a guitar track in. Not in the same league, but maybe some of his best stuff-- and an incredible tune, lyrics included.

(That is a great and harsh one, highly recommended ye guys. It's like electronic music, except with an analog electric instrument, overhot vacuum tubes for the amplification, and hardly any way to manipulate the things after it's all been recorded).

Emerson's composing techniques aside, most of the early sound wave synthesis was done through modular synthesizers. You know those big walls of circuitry where you need to patch envelopes/oscillators/frequencies/filters/etc. All that simultaneously while playing :) (and in his case jumping on/over, riding and kicking reverberation chambers on organs :P among other). He was a genius. RIP Like so. After giving Toccato about my 200th listen since my teen years, I looked up the composer, and it turns out the song is actually based on the Fourth Movement of Alberto Ginastera's 1st Piano Concerto. ELP were great about that-- transforming classical compositions into progressive rock excellence. The whole Pictures at an Exhibition album is one of those.
Except this one, which is a Greg Lake original I think: The Sage.

Sorry for the double posting bad etiquette. Too much good stuff here, can't help commenting.
From the Beginning is interesting, because it seems that people have real trouble figuring out exactly which chords he's playing. Even experienced guitar teacher people. If you download tabs, the chords will sound close, but not exact. So not right. Same for watching YouTube videos. I did find the right chords (to my ears at least) once, and that was a joyous day for me. They're barre chords around the 8th and 10th frets, with odd things sharpened and flattened, if I remember correctly.
That's the trouble-- I don't remember correctly. I hastily wrote them down at the time, but a cleaning crew bagged that scrap of paper along with a lot of other soggy stuff after a basement flood. I'll have to see if I can plot them out again, based on pure trial and error.

I always felt like Minmatar would listen to old, dirty rock music like The Cramps.Amarr music would sound like this. Not sure about Gal and Caldari, since I find both races rather boring tbh. Sansha would probably listen to crazy stuff like Black Midii (yes, this piece has 3,14 million notes, might melt your soundcard...) The Cramps! I have a t-shirt with that album image. And the shirt itself is that color of yellow! A gift from a friend who snagged it somewhere and took the time to ship it to me even. It's like child size though, too small for even a skinny guy to wear. Can't part with it, maybe I'll frame it or sew part of it onto a jacket or something. |
